Akosua is an exquirologist.
She finds lost things.
Max has lost his favourite sock sent to him from his nana basia in Ghana. Losing your favourite sock is hard. Luckily, he meets Akosua who is ready to help him solve this mystery.
Max tells Akosua he’s a journalist. The two friends search for the missing sock through their diverse community which is full of life. They notice many things along the way and Max documents all of their discoveries.
Garden of Lost Socks is two-time Scotiabank Giller prize winner, Esi Edugyan’s, first children’s picture book. In listening to her speak about the book, we learn that exquirologist is a made up name. Kids often use their imaginations to make up their own fancy words. I loved this part of the book.
This book is about much more than a missing sock.
Edugyan encourages us to embrace our curiosity through Max and Akosua’s inquisitive nature.
Each child uses their individual strengths to find more than they were looking for, including magic in the ordinary.
Helps with: diversity, team work, recognizing strengths, exploring, curiosity, friendship, adventure, self-sufficiency, and being a part of a community.
