Still feeling wedding fever from the Royal wedding this month? Wedding season is here and whether or not your child has any interest in weddings (or being a flower girl), this book will help you deal with a child who won’t let things go.
Lilly is bent on being the flower girl in her teacher’s upcoming wedding. To demonstrate her qualifications, she walks proudly in front of her teacher at recess, carrying a bouquet of weeds. Mr. Slinger rolls his eyes as she relentlessly practices her slow walk, smiling brightly and turning her head from side to side. This will be the biggest day of her life. Her teacher suggests she be the flower girl assistant, a job Lilly tries to get excited about.
What I like about Kevin Henkes books is how he deals with children’s complex feelings. He’s never afraid to show their jealousy, anger, and sadness and what’s underneath the behaviour. We also witness how Lilly’s parents and teacher manage her intense personality. In a surprising end turn, Lilly realizes the power of a supporting role.
Helps with: Feelings, strong willed child, teacher/student relationships, parent/child relationships, stubborn, jealousy, anger, disappointment and friendship.
