Did you know that water remembers our ancestors?
Water affects and connects us all on this planet.
Yet the Indigenous people foretold that the black snake would come and destroy the earth and the water we drink.
We must work together to protect and preserve our water.
Water is sacred.
We come from water. It nourishes us all on the planet.
In this poetic book, written by Carole Lindstrom an Anishinaaabe/Metis Water Protector, we see a young Ojibwe girl learning about the spiritual qualities and connection to water through her grandmother’s wisdom. She becomes a Water Protector, rallying her people to fight the Dakota Access Pipeline and protest together at Standing Rock.
The interconnectedness of all the plants, animals, rivers, lakes and humans is illustrated with flowing vibrant pictures that are so engaging I lingered and touched each page. It’s no surprise that this book won the 2021 Caldecott Medal.
We know that water is essential to our lives yet this book goes deeper. It connects us to the spirit of water. It reminds us that water is alive. We also connect with the tears and pain of the Indigenous people who continue to stand together for the Earth.
Are you ready to take a stand for water? Join the Indigenous community and honour their commitment to being stewards of the Earth.
At the back of the book, you can learn more about becoming a Water Protector and take a pledge to make this world a better place.
