Buddha at Bedtime: Tales of Love and Wisdom

Aug 9, 2025

“Relax, be very still, and listen—listen carefully to this tale about…”

So begins each of the 20 read aloud stories based on traditional Jakata Tales, which are stories originally told by the Buddha to share the lessons he learned on his journey towards enlightenment. These fables have been modernized and chosen to be relevant to younger children featuring characters such as a compassionate parrot, a smiling sun, and a fearless prince.

Parents will enjoy how the stories teach their kids to live compassionately, respect the natural world, to look inwards for answers, and accept the impermanence of all things.

Each story is 3-5 pages long and accompanied by an illustration at the beginning of the fable to get your child’s imagination ignited. At the end of each tale is a moral Buddhist lesson to contemplate together.

“Sometimes it is easy to let fear and jealousy cloud our judgment. A wise person knows that there is enough love in their heart to go to every creature in the world.”

This book provides an introduction to the origins of Buddhism and Buddhist values. Three guided meditations at the end of the book focus on loving kindness, breathing, and a meditation designed to boost your child’s self-confidence.

A perfect way to reduce your child’s anxiety and stress by reading and contemplating these powerful positive life lessons together before bedtime. Not only will you strengthen your connection to your child through discussion and reading aloud, but everyone will end up feeling relaxed, peaceful, and ready for sleep.

Helps with: imagination, visualization, meditation, breathing, creativity, relaxation, empathy, origins and key concepts of buddhism, compassion, loving kindness, humility, forgiveness, love, patience, honesty, perseverance, generosity, respect for the natural world, peace, and harmony.
