One Day This Tree Will Fall

Jul 21, 2024

My favourite tree was leaning for a very long time.

This year it finally fell.

What will happen when your favourite tree falls?

Will the story end?

A tree will start out as a seed and grow to become a home to many insects, and creatures.

The tree will have wounds, cracks, and crevices and one day the tree will fall.

And it’s story will go on.

Leslie Barnard Booth has written a beautiful non-fiction picture book about the life of trees, with vivid illustrations by Stephanie Fizer Coleman. She teaches us that trees that are damaged, dying, or dead, are still critical to the forest ecosystem. “…they provide nourishment and habitat for thousands of species—including the next generation of trees.”

The information at the back of the book is a great resource with additional details about the role trees play in the forest ecosystem including a glossary of terms. If you are looking for lessons and activities for the nature loving kids in your life, I would definitely check out the resources on Booth’s website. She also provides conservation resources and steps you can take to help the forests.

Nature provides a powerful way for us to witness the cycles of life. It reminds us how letting go allows something new to grow.

I loved knowing that the afterlife of a tree is just as crucial to honour as the life of a tree.

This book came at the right time. It helped me to feel a little less sad to say goodbye to my favourite tree.

Helps with: Understanding the cycles of life and ecosystems, the role of trees in the natural world, the creatures and insects that live in trees, protecting the forests, and how change, decay, and growth are an important part of nature and life. Homeschooling, and life science.
