A Shell is Cozy

Aug 4, 2024

When you find a beautiful shell on the beach, do you think about the important job it had?

A shell is cozy, showy, and protective.

They are hungry, athletic, and textured.

And they are everywhere.

I was eager to learn about the fascinating lives of shells in this award-winning nature book series by Dianna Hutts Aston and Sylvia Long. The water colour illustrations are vibrant making this book a beautiful work of art as well as an informative educational reference.

I love how each page introduces a poetic text describing what shells are “a shell is cozy” —and the topics are then explored in more detail to include the life cycle of the creatures which live in shells, the various forms shells take, and all the places they can be found.

A perfect read for nature loving, ocean loving, and animal loving people of all ages.

I can’t imagine looking at a shell again without taking in it’s important role of protecting and housing so many creatures. I am interested in checking out the rest of the books in the series such as An Egg is Quiet, A Butterfly is Patient, A Rock is Lively, and more.

If you haven’t had time to look for a shell in your travels, this book will provide you with inspiration to get out and explore.

Helps with: understanding the lives of shells and nature’s cycles, making learning fun, learning about art and history of shells, and sparking the imagination.
