The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend

Nov 6, 2025

Sometimes you can’t wait for a friend to show up.

You have to go out and find them.

On the island where imaginary friends are created, a white marshmallow puff little guy who wears a handmade gold crown, has been waiting for a real child to imagine him. He keeps hoping for his turn to be picked by a child and given a special name.

He decides to do the unimaginable and set off on a journey to the real world to search for his friend. When he is feeling very sad about not finding his person, he finally meets a little girl Alice, who feels “just right”. She names him Beekle.

Neither of them has ever made a friend before, so they’re not sure what to do.

This Caldecott Medal winning story, is told from the adorable perspective of the imaginary friend who has yet to be imagined. The illustrations are out of this world, brimming with imagination, colour, and feeling. The double page spread of Alice and Beekle’s interaction is so heartwarming.

It isn’t always easy to make new friends, but this story shows us that reaching out to someone new is worth it!

This simple story about the quest for friendship, will help young children to take risks and open up to new adventures with an imaginary friend or a friend with a big imagination.

Helps with: friendship, facing fears, taking risks, optimism, perseverance, positivity, imagination, creativity, imaginary friends, finding your place in the world, and making friends.
