Sulwe

Oct 1, 2020

Sulwe was born the colour of midnight and didn’t look like her family at all. She desperately wants to change how she looks to be like her sister whose skin is lighter.

When a shooting star takes her on a magical journey in the night sky, everything she sees and feels changes.

Author and actress Lupita Nyong’o, was just like Sulwe as a child and had to learn to see her dark skin as beautiful. She wrote this book to help more children know they’re beautiful when they are born and are a part of the beauty in the world. With stunning illustrations by Vashti Harrison, this book opens up a compelling discussion about how to find beauty within.

Dealing with the issue of colorism and racism this powerful picture book helps all of us to be kinder to ourselves and others. My favourite part is when Sulwe’s mother tells her:

“Real beauty comes from your mind and your heart. It begins with how you see yourself, not how others see you.”

Nyong’o reminds us that we don’t have to wait for anyone to tell us what beautiful is. With this encouragement, we can all see the beauty within ourselves.

Know that you are beautiful because you choose to be.

Helps with: understanding colorism and racism, building self-acceptance and self-esteem, being kind to yourself and others, standing up for who you are, discovering that true beauty comes from within.
